3D Supermesh Preprocessing

FEFLOW 8.0 offers a first level of access to tools and methods dedicated to the building and repairing of 3D surfaces and polylines, allowing the explicit creation of geological / structural geometric models. Relying on the state-of-the-art technology developed by Geode-Solutions, 3D Supermeshes can be processed in different was in order to achieve:

  • Surface/surface and surface/polyline intersections allowing the creation of a 3D geometric models from sets of independent surfaces, polylines, and points.
  • Remeshing of 3D triangulated surfaces, targeting both triangle equilaterality and user input mesh size metrics.
  • Simplification of 3D triangulated surfaces.
  • Generation of volumetric regions for 3D tetrahedral meshing with TetGen (see section 3D Meshing).
Geode-Solution’s embedded technology aims at guaranteeing the conformity and quality of 3D geometric data, the basic requirements for a robust 3D triangulation towards an optimal 3D unstructured finite element mesh.

Supermesh Repair and Retriangulation

Action Repair Surfaces (): Intersecting / repairing a set of independent 3D surfaces (polygonal, triangulations) including 3D polylines

  • Option Simplify repair output: After repairing and intersecting surfaces, this algorithm attempts to reduce and adapt the number of triangles and their shape towards optimal surfaces mesh representations of the geometric model.
  • Option Re-triangulate surfaces automatically after repairing: This combination of events allows for intersected geometries to be remeshed. The final product is a quality, ready-for-use 3D triangulation of the geometric model that can include 3D polylines.
  • Option Generate region markers for each block: The region information used by the TetGen tetrahedral mesher can be generated during a repair and/or remesh action. The result is a set of points with the Region attribute to be engaged in a TetGen meshing event, after which elemental selections representing the different model blocks are created (see section 3D Meshing).

Action Remesh Surfaces (): Remeshing 3D triangulations (including 3D polylines or not) using quality and size metrics

  • Option Preserve original vertices and segments: Prevent vertices and segments of the input geometries to be removed within planar regions. Some input configurations may produce results exhibiting external hulls being too deeply modified on output, in which case the option should be used.
  • Metric Dihedral angle for facet comparison: Dihedral angle beyond which planarity of triangles sets is considered. When attempting to preserve original vertices and segments during surface remeshing, this limit angle allows for planar regions to be remeshed without unexpected and exaggerated modifications of the external border shape.
  • Metric Target segment length of triangles: The desired length of generated triangles edges. No constraint is given if set to 0.
