Péclet Number

Unit: []

The Péclet number, relevant for the numerical stability of advection-dispersion transport processes can be displayed by using this parameter. It is defined as

Pe = (L v)/D

D includes both molecular diffusion (mass transport) / thermal conduction (heat transport) and mechanical dispersion.

In case of multi-species transport, the Péclet number refers to the first chemical / age species. For thermohaline models (mass and heat transport), the first mass transport species is used for the calculation.

To obtain the relevant grid Péclet number, for each element the characteristic length L is determined according to the element size in the flow direction.

As a very rough rule of thumb it is often said that the grid Péclet number should not exceed a value of 2.
