Parameter Estimation

The Operation mode Estimation in FePEST refers to solving the inverse problem by means of the Gauss-Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm (GLMA) as discussed previous section.

The fundamental setup described in this section prepares the model to be processed by PEST. Its steps are common to most PEST methods. The fundamental setup comprises the definition of parameters, observations and prior knowledge (if available). A decision on using regularization methods (Tikhonov or Subspace Regularization) is to be made, and finally, parallel computing may be configured to distribute workload on different computers.

The Estimation model can be used with the PEST package option (running classic PEST) or the PEST++ package option (running PEST-GLM). In doubt, it is recommended to use the classic PEST option as it is more mature, unless specific features of PEST++ are desired that are not available in PEST.

In summary this section covers in detail the following workflow:

  1. Optimization Control

  2. Parameters

  3. Observations

  4. Prior Information

Although other options are commonly used together with the Operation mode Estimation.
